Because of a reading assigned by a visiting scholar to my Sophomore Seminar class this week, I reread the Adorno and Horkheimer essay on The Culture Industry. He chose the perfect commentary given the state we have created for ourselves of no moment without entertainment that has been manufactured for us and which now controls us and worse, distances us from community.  Little did we think it would lead to the present political conditions.

There is little more to be said about the pleasures of a falling snow on an already beautiful land. Silent outside except for the sound of birds at the feeder, no traffic on my road except for the rare plow and the sound of the furnace going on occasionally. Tomorrow when we get back to the usual it will be different, but for these few hours, it is a reverie on the pleasures of home.
